Live Green Toronto launches app-based rewards program to encourage eco-friendly lifestyles

The City of Toronto’s Live Green Toronto initiative has launched an iOS and Android app based on its Live Green Card, which supports local businesses and promotes more environmentally-friendly lifestyles.

Live Green Perks is a new app-based rewards program that offers members exclusive access to discounts and deals at local businesses, as well as invitations to special events and contests.

Some of the local businesses participating in the rewards program include restaurants, retail stores and attractions that offer greener products, services or experiences.

For example, a current deal with Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC) offers 10 percent off during specific dates to encourage customers to buy a more eco-friendly mode of transportation, like a bicycle.

Balzac’s Coffee, meanwhile, is offering its ‘coffee in an ice cream cone’ at 25 percent off to reduce the amount of waste being put forth.

The Live Green Perks app is free to download on iOS and Android and anyone can join the program. Perks can be redeemed by showing the app at the time of purchase. Alternatively, a physical Perks card can also be requested.

Live Green Toronto says it will also plant a tree for every 20 deals that are claimed by users in the app. Trees will be planted in the Live Green Forest in the Smith Ness Forest Conservation Area in Ontario’s Niagara region.

“The Live Green Perks program makes it easier for people to make eco-friendly choices and support local businesses, which is a win for the city and the environment,” said Councillor Mary-Margaret McMahon (Ward 32 Beaches-East York), chair of the Parks and Environment Committee, in a press statement.

“It’s also a great way for Torontonians and visitors to get out there and explore what our amazing city has to offer.”
