Andy Rubin’s Essential smartphone, which the former head of Google’s Android division teased on Monday, will run Android, according to a tweet from Alphabet executive chairman Eric Schmidt.
“Phenomenal new choices for Android users coming very soon,” says the tweet Schmidt crafted in response to Rubin’s teaser, confirming the mysterious new smartphone will run Google’s mobile operating system.

At this point, not much else definitive is know about Essential’s first smartphone other than the fact it will feature a bezel-less display, as shown in Rubin’s teaser photo. In a report from January, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman said Rubin planned to compete against both Google and Apple by releasing a high-end smartphone that placed an emphasis on artificial intelligence.
