Alcatel announces Canadian launch of the Idol 4

Alcatel announced today that its newest flagship, the Idol 4, is set to make its Canadian debut on September 30th on the shelves of Quebec-based Videotron stores.

Those who purchase the smartphone at participating retail locations will also receive the limited-time gift of a set of Alcatel virtual reality goggles, which can be used with the phone’s VR launcher and pre-loaded Littlstar app.

The handset has a 5.2-inch 1920 x 1080 pixel, metal frame and all-glass body which comes in at 7.1mm thick. It also features a 2,610 mAh battery and 3.6-watt speakers featuring Waves audio technology. Its camera package stocks a 13-megapixel rear shooter and 8-megapixel wide-angle front-facing camera.

Under the hood, it’s powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 Octa-core processor and 2GB of RAM, with 16GB of internal storage (expandable up to 128GB).

The device comes preloaded with Android Marshmallow 6.0.1.

Additionally, the Idol 4 features the ‘Boom Key,’ a dedicated button that can be used to create shortcuts to certain applications, as well as other tasks such as increasing the volume or instantly opening the camera app.

“Alcatel continues to give our customers in Canada a better experience-driven value with our IDOL smartphone series and the all-new IDOL 4 at Videotron,” said Steve Cistulli, the president and general manager of Alcatel North America in a press release sent to MobileSyrup.

“And by also offering our VR experience exclusively at Videotron in Canada, customers have the opportunity to experience even more from their smartphone.”

The phone will sell for $0 on a 2-year contract and $299.99 on a no term contract, and will also be available at Bell and Virgin Mobile.

Update 9/21/16: The article was originally published with a typo regarding the size of the battery, mistyped as 2,160 mAh rather than 2,610 mAh. That has now been fixed, thanks to MobileSyrup readers.

Update 9/28/16: Pricing and availability with Bell and Virgin Mobile were announced. The article has been updated to represent that.
