With its new FreeRange TV mobile app, Shaw has become the latest Canadian telecom provider to launch a companion streaming solution.
Built upon Comcast’s X1 platform, the iOS and Android app allows Shaw’s more than 2.6-million subscribers to access content from the cable provider on their mobile device. The app is available to both Shaw Cable and Shaw Direct customers.
All told, the app allows the company’s subscribers to access more than 80 live TV channels, 30,000 on-demand titles and, blissfully, there are more than 1,500 children’s titles that can be downloaded through to the app. A unified search interface akin to what’s available on devices like the Roku allows users to search all available TV shows and movies without needing to remember the specific channel or networks associated with the content in question.
Shaw FreeRange is similar to Bell’s Fibe TV offering, which requires a compatible television package in order to use the app.
The app is available on Apple devices running iOS 8.0 and higher, as well as Android devices on 4.0.3 and up. Download it from the iTunes App Store or Google Play Store.
