Netflix is raising the cost of its most popular subscription by $1

  • Raj Singh

Totally okay with that as long as they keep producing original content…
They should revamp their UI though… and let me remove films (I have no intention of watching or have already watched) from the carousel.

    • Mitchell Palmater

Cool idea. I’d love to “hide” content i don’t care about lol

    • disqus_vPnVddwEMi

Would you be OK with it if they did it again next year? What if they did this annually?

    • cartfan88

I wish people had as much issues with their ever rising property taxes at $500-1000 higher a year vs this at $12 a year.

    • disqus_vPnVddwEMi

Well this is a tech blog focused on Canadian telecom so you might be in the wrong place for that perspective. I know lots of people that care more about property taxes than netflix costs, they just don’t show up in articles about the latter.

You will never own a house so you wouldn’t understand.

    • Sebastien Grenier

I have a house and imho 15, 99$ will still be cheap considering if you have cable tv you pay as much or more for stuff you don’t like.

Netflix is the way to do TV properly.

    • Raj Singh

No, I would not. Honestly, I think 7.99 is cheap. I think 9.99 is cheap. More importantly, it’s great value. If it becomes a trend, I might get irritated. Though, considering how I feel today, I’m fine paying up to 15 bucks a month for it.

    • Stephen Alarcon

With inflation rising the price of Netflix will continue to climb and things will become so expensive we’ll have money pouring out of our eye sockets.

    • Sebastien Grenier

I’ll be OK withwith that, their more and more content.

as an exemple some Disney movies has made their way and my kids are really happy with it.

we see more French traduction too, which is good for the Quebec customers.

    • Major Suave

its possible to hide them in the browser

    • Raj Singh

I don’t use the browser but good to know. I use it via apps on the XB1, 360, PS4, PS3, Windows 10, Windows Phone, Android and iOS.

    • Stephen Alarcon

There should be a setting to view only unwatched content and vice versa.

  • Brad Fortin

Will this help Canadians get better content?

    • WhoCares1000

    • Do Do

Which is why I have no use for Netflix.

    • Raj Singh

You don’t think there’s any good content on Netflix?

    • MassDeduction

Hulu and Amazon Prime Video, among others, have been signing exclusive content deals in the U.S. and Netflix has been losing that content. In many cases Canadian Netflix still has that content. So it’s not like before when Canadian Netflix was a subset of American; the two now compare very favourably to each other. There are a lot of popular shows (such as “24”) that are on Canadian Netflix but not American Netflix now.

  • WhoCares1000

Back in May 2014 they announced a price hike from $7.99 to $8.99 but anyone who signed up before got the $7.99 price until May 2016 at which point it goes to $8.99. So does that mean we will pay $8.99 starting May 2016 or $9.99?

    • Harold Mitchell

I’m one of those subscribers as well, so let’s hope so!

    • MassDeduction

We’re eventually going to $9.99. They said current subscribers who’re not currently grandparented will have a year before the price increase kicks in, so (depending on the fine print) it’ll either be May 2016 or October 2016 before people paying $7.99 start paying $9.99.

  • Brad Moriarity

Existing customers from before the $8.99 price will continue paying their current rate (either $6.99 or 7.99), but only until May 2016.

  • Stephen B Morris

Considering that they could easily raise the basic tier to $10 and the 4K tier to $15 and they wouldn’t lose subscribers by any significant number, this isn’t much of an issue. Cord cutters will still be paying a lot less than cable and Shomi and Crave doesn’t seem to compare to their offerings. I could be wrong though.

  • Pixelicious

As long as Daredevil is continued I’m okay with this. I’ll pay a $5 hike if they resurrect Firefly and The Killing.

    • Delphus

Gotta love how Marvel brings TV, Netflix, Movies into the mix and manage to align all of them 🙂
