Samsung announced today that it intends to issue security fixes more often. The company stated this initiative was “fast tracked” due to the recent StageFright vulnerability that was discovered in phones running Android 2.2 and above. It promises that security updates will take roll out over-the-air about once per month .
Dong Jin Koh, EVP and Head of Mobile Research and Development at Samsung, stated, “with the recent security issues, we have been rethinking the approach to getting security updates to our devices in a more timely manner. Since software is constantly exploited in new ways, developing a fast response process to deliver security patches to our devices is critical to keep them protected. We believe that this new process will vastly improve the security of our devices and will aim to provide the best mobile experience possible for our users.”
Samsung is currently in the process of working with its carrier partners around the world to implement the strategy. Good thing, too, because Samsung devices are sold at every carrier across Canada.
