Smartwatches could last more than a day thanks to an innovative new battery design from LG Chem

LG Chem Battery

LG Chem, one of South Korea’s largest chemical manufacturers, has started shipping a newly designed battery that promises to greatly improve the battery life of smartwatches, according to a report from The Korea Times.

Compared to more traditional batteries, which are often shaped in the form of rectangle or circle, LG Chem’s battery looks like a hexagon. The advantage of this design is that it provides more surface area, in turn increasing capacity. The simple change in shape is such a game changer that the company says that battery capacity is boosted by about 25 per cent. In fact, it’s already shipping the battery to many top-tier manufacturers.

However, according to the same report, Apple and LG, the two companies that could make the most use out of this tech haven’t ordered any of the batteries. In Apple’s case, the current Apple Watch does not have the proper shape to take advantage the new battery.

Poor battery life has long been the bane of many otherwise excellent devices. Thankfully, better battery tech might be coming soon. Alongside LG Chem’s efforts in Korea, closer to home a former Carelton University student named Tim Sherstyuk has been working on a technology that extends the life of a laptop battery by up to 30 per cent.
