The Apple App Store is back up after hours of downtime

Apple is experiencing an outage of its App Store and iTunes, the two content portals millions of users access daily to download apps, games, books, movies and music. The outage is also affecting the Mac App Store and iBooks across all platforms.

The company first noted the outage around 5am ET / 2am PT, but at the time it only affected a small number of users. Since then, the issue has cascaded, likely due to a server outage or similar domino effect.

As of 11:46am ET, the Apple System Status page notes that the App Store is down “for all users,” and there is no indication as to when it will come back.

Update: The Apple Store is back up. According to a statement to CNBC, “We apologize to our customers experiencing problems with iTunes and other services this morning. The cause was an internal DNS error at Apple. We’re working to make all of the services available to customers as soon as possible, and we thank everyone for their patience.”
