ecobee has announced that it is expanding the retail availability of its ecobee3 smart thermostat. Toronto-based Ecobee launched the ecobee3 back in September of 2014 as an upgraded version of its original smart thermostat. It adds a 3.5-inch touchscreen, a redesigned UI and remote sensors capable of measuring temperature and occupancy in multiple locations.
The ecobee3 is priced at $249 and comes with one remote sensor. Starting today is available through Apple Canada. Apple will be selling the ecobee3 in its stores as well as on its website. Additional sensors can be purchased for $79 for a package of two, though it doesn’t look like you’ll be able to buy them at the Apple store, so you best get acquainted with the ecobee Canada site if you want sensors in multiple rooms.
Ecobee is a direct competitor to Google-owned Nest. The eight-year-old company is based in Toronto but sells its thermostats in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Australia. Its thermostats have had support for remote temperature control since 2011 and the company launched its developer API two years later, in 2013.
Edit: A previous version of this story incorrectly states that additional sensors for the ecobee3 were priced at $15 per unit. The cost of additional sensors is actually $79 for a package of two. This story has been updated to reflect that fact.
