These smart earplugs will block out everything but your phone’s notifications

The purpose of a wearable device is to improve your life without adding to the stuff you already carry around every day. That’s probably why we see so many wearables based on existing “dumb” products, like watches, hats, glasses, or buttons. Now you can add earplugs to that list thanks to a hot new Kickstarter project.

A company based out of California has taken to the crowdfunding site to bankroll a new idea that marries your smartphone’s ‘quiet hours’ with garden variety earplugs. Dubbed Hush, these Bluetooth-enabled earplugs block out noise around you while allowing audio alerts from your phone. Notifications come through a Bluetooth connection and companion app. Aside from letting you customize which notifications you want to hear, the Hush app also lets you set reminders and alarms, play soothing tracks through the earplugs (like ocean sounds), and set the volume of your alerts.

Of course, regular earplug users might argue out that these are no different than a pair of wireless earbuds and therefore lack the comfort of a conventional pair of earplugs. However, Hush has gone to great pains to make sure these earplugs are comfortable for all kinds of sleepers. This means heat-sensitive memory foam, silicon padding, an angled design and a curved exterior to make sleeping with these wedged in your ears as comfortable as possible. You’re not going to roll over and suddenly feel like there’s a stone on your pillow.

There’s still roughly three weeks left on the Kickstarter, and backers putting up $115 or more will get a pair of Hush when the product starts shipping next June, along with a 3-pack of foam tips (if you pledge $200 you’ll get two pairs). Retail pricing at launch will be $150.
