Motorola unveiled the successor to its Moto X smartphone earlier this month and it looks like an unlocked version will be coming soon. The Verge reports that this version will be available to purchase direct from Motorola later this month.
Motorola’s version of Android is already pretty close to the stock Android experience users get on the Nexus devices. Motorola doesn’t go wild with branded UIs and customizations, which is likely a by-product of the company’s acquisition by Google.
As such, the company doesn’t seem to have any plans for a Google Play Edition, however, it will be selling the device unlocked in the form of a “Pure Edition’ that is free of any carrier customizations. That also means faster updates because they don’t have to be vetted by the carriers before being pushed to devices.
No word on precise availability for this device, but it will work on AT&T and T-Mobile, so it will at the very least be compatible with Canadian carriers.
