Two members of the Canadian mobile industry have made it onto this year’s list of Canada’s most powerful business people. Compiled by Canadian Business, the 2014 list of the 50 most powerful business people in Canada includes BlackBerry CEO John Chen, as well as the CRTC’s chair Jean-Pierre Blais. Both businessmen make the list’s top 10.
John Chen, who comes in at number eight on the list, hasn’t been in charge for a year but has already overseen some pretty significant changes at the company, including a massive restructuring. He sits between Galen G. Weston, president of Loblaws, and Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz. Canadian Business writes that the nation’s hopes of reclaiming its place as a global technology powerhouse rest with John Chen. Perhaps a little over the top, given the amazing tech companies coming out of Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver, but it’s hard to argue with magazine when it says Chen has us ‘cheering for Canada’s tech darling once again.’
Blais has been chairman of the CRTC for just over two years and “oversees a $100-billion industry in unprecedented upheaval.” Though this is Blais’ first time on the list of Canada’s most powerful business people, he made the list of most powerful Canadians (compiled by Macleans) last year. He came in at number 34, and was accompanied by former BlackBerry CEO Mike Lazaridis, who placed 10th for his work surrounding quantum technology.
