With the announcement of the Nexus 5 and Android OS 4.4 KitKat today, Google has informed us that Android 4.4 will be coming to older Nexus devices relatively soon. Wendy Bairos, PA for Google Canada, confirmed that the “Nexus 4, 7, 10, the Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One Google Play Edition devices will be updated in the coming weeks.” The Nexus 7 means both the 2012 and 2013 editions.
Unfortunately, the 2011-era Galaxy Nexus will remain on Android 4.3. This is a strange realization after Google promised that KitKat would actually make older hardware run faster; the Galaxy Nexus has 1GB of RAM and a dual-core processor, but somehow the company feels it is incapable of running the latest version of Android.
Hopefully some avid custom ROM developers can port Android 4.4 to the Galaxy Nexus using AOSP code, which is currently rolling out now.
