What’s a flexible display without an accompanying flexible battery? Samsung has already promised to bring the world a smartphone with a flexible display, but there’s no word on any other specs. However, there’s been a progression on the research front by a Professor Keon Jae Lee and his team at the Korean Advanced Institute Of Science And Technology. They’ve developed “a high performance flexible all-solid-state battery” that is specifically made for “flexible displays.” The battery is flexible, bendable, light and is printed on a thin film, making it an ideal candidate for “consumer electronics including rollable displays,” such as future tablets or smartphones.
The research team posted a demo of the flexible battery being manipulated and powering an a blue LED light. Professor Lee stated that “the advent of a high performance flexible thin film battery will accelerate the development of next-generation fully flexible electronic systems in combination with existing flexible components such as display, memory, and LED.” Unfortunately there’s no talk of when this will be mass produced.
