Jailbreak news: iPad 3 untethered jailbreak coming soon, and restore your A5-based device to iOS 5.0.1 using redsn0w

Two pieces of jailbreak news for you today.

First, pod2g, the man behind the original Absinthe untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0.1, has managed to work his magic on the shipping firmware of the iPad 3, iOS 5.1. While there is no current release date for the jailbreak, pod2g says it is coming in the next few weeks — they just have to sort of some stability issues with the exploit.

There is no doubt that a jailbreak for the new iPad is a big deal. This will be the first time that an iOS device with 1GB of RAM has been opened up in such a way, and will allow for some truly spectacular multitasking capabilities. The Retina display will allow for Quasar, a multi-screen app tool, to work the way it was intended. The options are endless.

The second thing to happen is a bit more immediate. redsn0w 0.9.11 beta 1 has been released which allows users of A5-based devices to downgrade to iOS 5.0.1, which will then allow them to jailbreak again. This is the next best thing to being able to jailbreak the latest software, but at the moment it’s all we have.

Dev-team says that the features “allows A5 downgrades without a bootrom-level exploit,” meaning that there is no hackery going on here: it just bypasses Apple’s server check for older firmwares.

You will need to have SHSH blobs saved from the OS you want to downgrade to, but that shouldn’t be a problem for most jailbreakers.

Check out the Windows and OS X version of redsn0w 0.9.11b1 for more information.
