Metro, the world’s most popular daily newspaper, has come to iOS and Android with native Canadian apps, catering to local markets such as Victoria, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Regina, Winnipeg, Windsor, London, Kitchener, Toronto, Hamilton, Ottawa, Montréal (en français) and Halifax.
It’s got a fairly clean design, and uses GPS to detect which market you are in. The front page is designed in a magazine style, with a small arrow giving way to a divided Sections area, focusing on local, Canadian, and world news, along with requisite topics like Life and Technology.
The iOS app has also been optimized for the iPad’s larger screen, while the Android app doesn’t scale as nicely. Both platforms support offline reading, while the Android app goes one step further and allows background updates.
