emporia Telecom has absolutely no brand recognition in Canada. This popular entry-level European manufacturer recently announced plans to enter our fine land by releasing a couple handsets. At CES today I quickly had a conversation with Greg Foley, President and CEO of emporia Telecom, USA, and he expects to see the emporiaCLICK and emporiaSOLIDplus hit at least one carrier “early Spring”. Although there are no signed carrier contracts yet, both devices are unlocked and GSM 850/1900 and 1700 AWS compatible.
These phones are not going to be for everyone. They look different than what we’re used to seeing here and are apparently going to be marketed to a wide audience – teens all the way up to seniors. The phones both have large buttons, small displays, low quality cameras and a flashlight. The emporiaCLICK is a flip phone that will be priced around $100 outright, while the rugged emporiaSOLIDplus will be $150 outright.
