NVIDIA’s Tegra Zone was launched as a way to help its Tegra 2 userbase discover which games were available, and optimized, for the chipset. But at its core was a way for consumers to buy games “exclusively” for that single of NVIDIA hardware. Sure, it seems innocent enough — a Marketplace-downloadable app in which you can separately pay for existing games optimized for a specific chipset — and who are we to argue with the rolling conquest of capitalism?
Qualcomm is trying to emulate the success of that portal with their own GameCommand app. Launching in North America on January 10th, the app will be available in the Android Marketplace for those with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon SoC’s, which encompasses a fair number of Canadian smartphones, including the Samsung Galaxy S II X and LTE, HTC EVO 3D and Sensation, Raider and Amaze, along with Sony Ericsson’s whole Xperia lineup.
Why is this not a good idea? Well, for starters it further fragments the already-confusing Android gaming market. It purports to be a portal, a place to round up existing titles optimized for Snapdragon chips, but when Tegra Zone was released, we saw games already on the market re-released with “THD” appended to their names, ostensibly “repackaged” to take advantage of the “advanced” nature of NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 chipset. In reality these improvements were shallow at best, and at worst they prevented you from playing that game once you upgraded to a different device.
GameCommand promises some exclusives like Fight Game Heroes which, according to the press release, “features head-to-head battles with real MMA fighters, including multiple combat champion and UFC fighter Alistair ‘The Reem’ Overeem.” But, as with the Tegra Zone, GameCommand will “give mobile users a way to quickly discover, organize and access the latest Snapdragon optimized, featured and exclusive games,” and that means more development houses are taking their time away from creating games for the whole Android market, lured by the prospect of exclusivity.
The full CES-centric press release is after the break.
