Who could have seen the juggernaut that iPhone would become when it made its soft debut in 2007? Four years and over a hundred million handsets later, it is the most successful cellphone in terms of sales, and by far the most profitable in history.
In an interview with the Wallstreet Journal, current Sony Ericsson CEO, Bert Nordberg, who wasn’t the boss at the time, admits they his company should have taken Apple’s device more seriously when it debuted. While he is happy the company has chosen Android as its platform of choice — they “wouldn’t feel comfortable investing in a platform that isn’t as good as the one that we currently use,” — they may have been able to more successfully counter Apple’s attacks had they planned for them sooner.
Sony Ericsson is not considered one of the top Android manufacturers despite success around the world with its Xperia line, especially the Xperia arc and Xperia Play devices. It sits well back of Samsung, HTC and Motorola in overall smartphone market share, but with this latest crop of devices — including the upcoming Telus Xperia ray — they hope to change consumers’ perceptions of the company.
