Some Pixel 9 owners report auto-brightness issues, but there’s a fix

Some Pixel 9 owners are experiencing issues with auto-brightness, which could be a result of the device’s adaptive brightness capability.

Spotted by Android Authority, several Pixel 9 Pro XL users have taken to Reddit to complain about strange auto brightness behaviour on the device. For example, one user complained that the Pixel 9 Pro XL was always dimmer than they preferred. And while I haven’t had any issues with my Pixel 9, I do find myself bumping up the brightness more frequently than before.

One Redditor suggested that people who transferred their data from a previous phone might have brought over the adaptive brightness model, leading to weird brightness issues.

Adaptive brightness is one of many ‘adaptive’ features on Pixel devices that use machine learning to adapt to user preferences. The idea is that every time you adjust the brightness on your Pixel phone, it ‘learns’ from that change so that, hopefully, you don’t need to make an adjustment in similar circumstances. However, if that model transfers over to a new device, it’s possible it could cause problems if the displays are different.

The fix for the issue seems to be clearing the adaptive brightness settings, which seems to have worked for several Redditors. To do so, users need to dive deep into the Settings app: Settings > Apps > See all apps > Device Health Services > Storage and cache > Clear storage > Reset adaptive brightness.

Of course, even if you do this, you’ll still need to wait a bit while the phone learns your preferences again. Regardless, it seems to be helping others so if you’re having brightness issues, it might be worth a try.
