Better late than never: pink Barbie flip phone arrives over a year after movie

The company says it's "the perfect tool to live your best life and take a vacation from your smartphone"

Barbie Phone

We’re well over a year past the Barbie craze of summer 2023, but that hasn’t stopped HMD from belatedly getting in on the action.

The company has announced that its hot pink Barbie Phone, which was first teased in February for a summer launch, will now be released this October. A reason for the delay wasn’t provided.

As the company that currently owns the Nokia brand, HMD has made the Barbie handset an appropriately Nokia-esque flip phone. As such, the device isn’t intended to be a smartphone replacement, since it really only offers call and text functionality. In fact, HMD even says it’s “the perfect tool to live your best life and take a vacation from your smartphone.”

It does have some other little flourishes, though. For one, the T9 keyboard sports little images on the buttons, like hearts and flamingos that can light up in the dark. A voice will also say “Hi Barbie” when you boot up the phone. All of that certainly matches the Barbie vibe.

The Barbie Phone will be sold on HMD’s website for $129 USD (about $173 CAD). Pre-orders will go live on September 23rd. We’ve reached out to HMD for confirmation of Canadian availability and we’ll update this story once a response has been received. (In the meantime, you can always stream Barbie on Crave, if you have a hankering for Barbie.)

Now all we need is Samsung to re-release the exploding Galaxy Note 7 and give it Oppenheimer branding to complete the Barbenheimer pairing.
