iPhone and iPad beta testers can now download the eighth version of iOS 18 and the third version of iOS 18.1, which includes Apple Intelligence features.
Apple recently announced the timing of its fall iPhone event on September 9th so there is precedent that this version of the beta might be almost as stable as the public release of iOS 18 in the fall, but that’s unconfirmed as Apple still has time to squeeze out another beta before the 9th.
So far online, it seems like the iOS 18.1 beta has had more changes, with the addition of Apple’s ‘Clean up’ AI eraser feature and a new series of welcome screens to help new tech users with some of the AI enhancements. One of the coolest things in the new setup screen is the demo for the notifications summaries, which uses AI to summarize the iconic “Here’s to the crazy ones” Steve Jobs quote into “A poem celebrating people who think differently,” according to Twitter user @aaron613.
To further this, notification summaries seem to apply to more third-party apps in the new iOS 18.1 beta, which should make them much more useful.
If you have an iPhone 15 Pro, the ‘Cleanup’ function can be found within the Photos app. It allows you to select people or things, and the AI will try to paint them out of your scene. This feature, along with most of the Apple Intelligence AI features, will be limited to the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 16 series.
It’s unclear what has been added to the seventh version of the iOS 18 dev beta, but I suspect it’s currently focusing mostly on bug fixes and stabilization enhancements.
