AMD CPU owners can now download a performance boost [Update]

Early tests show an average performance improvement of 10 percent in games

Update 28/08/2024 at 9:07am ET: Following our coverage yesterday of the forthcoming Windows 11 update that will boost performance for AMD CPUs, Microsoft backported the changes to the 23H2 version of Windows. That means AMD CPU owners can now download the update without waiting for the 24H2 release expected in late September.

Per a statement from AMD to Wccftech, users will need to check for the ‘KB5041587‘ update in Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates. Once installed, Zen 4 and Zen 5 AMD chips should see a performance improvement in games. According to early testing detailed in the original story (which follows below), there’s an average improvement of about 10 percent.

Microsoft’s 24H2 update for Windows 11 is bringing significant performance improvements to some AMD chips.

Notably, AMD previously said an upcoming Windows update would boost performance for its new Ryzen 9000 series, but it seems the update also improves performance for older Ryzen CPUs too.

Per tests run by Hardware Unboxed and KitGuru, the update boosts performance by about 10 percent. Hardware Unboxed tested the Ryzne 7 7700X (based on previous Zen 4 architecture) and the Ryzen 7 9700X (on the new Zen 5 architecture) and found both performed better. The 7700X saw an average 10 percent improvement across multiple games running at 1080p resolution, while in the same tests, the 9700X saw an 11 percent improvement.

KitGuru’s testing saw similar performance improvements in AMD’s 7800X3D chip as well as improvements to the Ryzen 9 7950X.

On the one hand, this should be good news for people with AMD CPUs. A roughly 10 percent performance bump is nothing to sneeze at, especially when it comes to older CPUs. At the same time, the update is bringing roughly the same level of performance improvement to AMD’s newer CPUs, and coupled with the small performance gap between Zen 4 and 5 processors, AMD’s latest CPUs remain in a disappointing position.

However, we’re still roughly a month away from the release of the 24H2 update and things could change in that time. Microsoft is expected to release the update in late September, though people can get an early jump on the software through the Windows Insider program.
