Facebook merges Stories and Messenger Day into one shared feature

Facebook and Messenger on iPhone

Facebook has announced that it has consolidated Messenger Day and Facebook Stories into one shared feature. The 24-hour ephemeral posts — simply called ‘Stories’ — will now appear in both Facebook and Messenger.

Previously, Messenger Day and Facebook Stories were the same in concept — posted photos or videos that disappear after 24 hours — but had existed separately.

Stories will also now be synced, ensuring that viewing the content on one platform will make it appear as viewed on the other.

“We needed to make it easier for people to share Stories across different apps,” Facebook product manager Connor Hayes said of the change in an interview with TechCrunch. “Some people actually thought these experiences were already connected. We feel like it would make sense.”

However, the respective camera filters in Facebook and Messenger will remain distinct. The base Facebook app will continue to focus on augmented reality face coverings and effects, while Messenger will emphasize captions and stylized text.

Facebook is also launching a ‘Stories for events’ feature, which will allow users to collectively contribute to one Story for a given event (such as a birthday party or music festival). Submissions will be moderated by an event’s administrators.
