Netflix reportedly has plans to launch ‘choose your own adventure’ style feature

Netflix, the streaming platform behind award winning series like The Crown and House of Cards, is reportedly working on a way to give viewers control of key plot decisions.

A report, stemming from The Daily Mail, compares the feature to a simple, linear choose-your-own-adventure book. Examples cited include citing whether a character joins a specific gang in prison comedy Orange Is The New Black, or an alternative ending to a show like Riverdale.

In an interview with The Daily Mail, an unnamed source says, “We’re doing work on branch narratives so you are actually making choices as you watch. All the content will be there, and then people will have to get through it in different ways.”

“We’ll see how it plays out. It’s an experiment. We’ll see if it gets much success. For creators, it’s new territory.”

To make this feature happen, however, actors would need to film alternate plot segments in advance, allowing users to choose their own way through the story.

Netflix reportedly has plans to run a trial of choose-your-own-adventure shows for children later this year. If the test proves successful, the streaming platform reportedly has plans to launch similar content aimed at an adult audience.

Update 08/03/17: Netflix Canada sent us the following statement regarding the above rumour:

“Netflix is constantly exploring ways to create a better experience for its members. We first introduced interactive elements to our Kids series, Kong, in April 2016. We will continue to experiment in this format to learn more about what our members enjoy.”
