Apple’s Jimmy Iovine kills Tidal acquisition rumours

It looks like Apple has no plans to purchase rival streaming music service Tidal, according to a recent statement from Apple executive Jimmy Iovine on Wednsday.

In an interview with Buzzfeed News, Iovine said, “We’re really running our own race. We’re not looking to acquire any streaming services.” It’s worth noting, however, that the statement does not deny that Apple and Tidal discussed a potential acquisition at some point in the last few weeks, though it seems that if that did occur, the talks likely didn’t go very far.

Rapper Kanye West, in typical fashion, made a plea for Apple to buy the Jay-Z-owned Tidal just a few months ago on Twitter. Apple Music currently has 17 million subscribers, with Tidal’s installed base falling in the 4.2 million range. Spotify remains the king of the streaming music scene with subscriber numbers amounting to 40 million, a number the service just release this week.
