Google Map’s beta version 9.36.0 is now rolling out, bringing with it some minor but handy new features– most notably, an easier way to set up routes that avoid tolls, ferries and highways. Other updates include nearby traffic notifications and the ability to create custom lists of locations if you’re signed up as a ‘Local Guide’ with the app.
Rather than having to take multiple steps to manually set your avoidance preferences, beta users can now tap on the microphone and say “avoid tolls” (or highways or ferries) to make the change. It’s not quite the permanent setting many users are awaiting, but it does streamline the process considerably.
In the notifications section in settings, ‘Traffic Nearby’ has been added. The function gives users real-time notifications of conditions in the area with pop-ups for sudden flare-ups or cool-downs.
Those who are part of the Local Guide community in Google Maps– users who rate, review and discover new locations on the app– can now make custom lists, as long as they’re level four or higher. For instance: ‘My Favorite Places,’ or ‘Want to Go.’ Becoming a local guide is a simple online sign-up process, though users must be 18 or up to participate.
Becoming a Google Maps beta user is a similarly easy process, though alpha users should see these updates in the near future regardless.
