On June 30, PayPal will retire both its native Windows Phone mobile app, as well as its BlackBerry 10 mobile app, the company announced today.
Moving forward, users on a smartphone running one of those two operating systems will have to use a browser (or an iOS or Android device) to access PayPal’s peer-to-peer payment platform from their mobile device. Those on an iOS or Android device will be required to upgraded to the latest version of the PayPal mobile app to continue using the service via an app.
“It was a difficult decision to no longer support the PayPal app on these mobile platforms, but we believe it’s the right thing to ensure we are investing our resources in creating the very best experiences for our customers. We remain committed to partnering with mobile device providers, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause our customers,” said Joanna Lambert, vice-president of global consumer product and engineering at PayPal, in a statement on the company’s website.
The news comes on the same day Microsoft announced it will cut an additional 1,850 jobs related to its mobile phone division and exit the consumer smartphone market. Similarly, a number of weeks ago Facebook ended native app support for BB10 devices.
