The release of The Odyssey, GoPro’s first dive into VR, had potential buyers gawking at the price. Just in case you don’t have $15,000 USD, the company has released a first glimpse at its Omni VR camera rig.
The Omni has been described as a cube that holds a Hero4 Black camera on each side, allowing six cameras to capture footage at once. Though pricing for the Omni hasn’t been announced yet, The Verge writer Jacob Kastrenakes states that the cameras alone will cost $2500 USD, or approximately $3200 CAD.
The release of the Omni follows the September 2015 release of Odyssey, a VR collaboration between Google and GoPro that comes with $8,000 USD worth in 16 Hero4 Black cameras plus 16 “bacpacs” that help mount the cameras on the rig, relevant cables, microSD cards and a pelican case to help store and transport the device. The $15,000 USD price tag places it at almost $20,000 CAD.
Odyssey is optimized for Google’s Jump VR platform, which was first opened to beta testing in June, 2015.
Unlike the Odyssey, the Omni appears to be GoPro’s attempt at offering a VR solution to non-professional filmmakers. The release of a more accessible VR rig could further promote the popularity of 360 degree video.
GoPro has opted to being the Omni to NAB 2016, a major video production trade show taking place from April 18 to April 21.
