Starting today, you can use Google Street View to visit Petra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Jordan that is famous for its rock-cut architecture and for being one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.
This is the fifth Street View project Google has undertaken in the Arab world. Previous efforts include the Pyramids of Giza and the Liwa Desert.
Like it did with Canada’s majestic national parks and historic sites, Google gave employees Street View Trekker units to map the city’s many winding paths and monuments.
Most people in the west are familiar with Petra through its multiple cameos in Hollywood movies. The city’s treasury made one of its most famous silver screen appearances in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. After attempting to find the location of the Holy Grail for most of the movie, Indy and his father, played by Sean Connery in one of his most memorable roles, find the Grail in Petra treasury. More recently, the ancient city was featured in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.
