Rdio partners with The Echo Nest to bring personalized radio stations its streaming app on iOS and Android

Rdio has launched a major new feature today to take on Pandora, Spotify and, in many ways, Songza, in the streaming music space.

Traditionally an a la carte streaming service, with an optional but lesser-used ability to create playlists based on what you and your friends are listening to most, Rdio has launched, in partnership with The Echo Nest, fully-formed personalized radio on Android, iOS and the web.

Called Stations, these never-ending playlists combine searched-for artists and pre-populated categories, combining to create an ecelectic and constantly-changing list of music. For example, searching for a particular artist can display a list of albums or popular tracks, but with Stations users can create a playlist that includes his or her songs and many that fit the same mould. At the same time, Rdio generates Stations based on Heavy Rotation, your Collection, and most-played artists.

There are 10 station types and 20 million songs to play, so you’re unlikely to run out of new things to listen to. Rdio has recently been working on expanding its usability from an artists-you-know service to one of discovery, keeping you in the app long after you’re finished listening to a particular album or playlist.

One interesting aspect of Stations is called You FM, a personalized, adjustable and expanding playlist that uses The Echo Nest’s “Taste Profiling” to use previous listening history, Facebook likes, Twitter follows and in-app track voting to generate a specific but eclectic cross section of musical flavours.

Rdio’s update also incorporates a new player, which allows for voting on individual songs and fine tuning stations to meet your needs. This resembles Slacker Radio’s functionality, but comes across more mature and stable.
