Gmail for iOS gains new Inbox features and customizable notifications

Gmail for iOS got a boost today, bringing the same category-based inbox to its existing interface as the Android version got yesterday and the web version received a week ago.

The new app feels a lot smoother, too, causing fewer typos and missed letters than previous versions. The main update here revolves around automatically-assigned categories, with each incoming email being divided into colour-coordinated tabs. These tabs are not only customizable but you can smoothly move emails between them, assigning that sender to the same area indefinitely. The system works in conjunction with Labels but can be used independently.

Users can also customize notifications for incoming email between “All New Mail”, “Primary Only” and “None”, the middle choice on by default. Most important email will arrive in the Primary category, potentially saving battery life and annoyance by cutting down on errant notifications.
