First Medfield-based Android devices will ship this week, says Intel CEO

During this week’s Intel earnings investor’s call, CEO Paul Otellini claimed that its first Medfield-equipped smartphones will ship this week. We took a look at the Lenovo K800 during CES and really liked it.

It has a 4.5-inch 720p resolution display, an 8MP camera with 10fps burst mode, and a 1.6Ghz Atom Z2460 Medfield chip. Otellini said that the unnamed smartphone will be the first of many Intel-powered Android phones. Recently Android 4.0.4 was introduced with increased support for x86 processors. Android’s SDK and emulator were also updated with x86 support, making it easy for developers to quickly and easily port their current apps.

It’s not known whether Canada will see any of these Medfield-powered devices; The K800 is set to hit China first, with no current North American release date. But it’s exciting to see another player in the SoC arms race.
