Sony Ericsson will unlock boot loader on select 2011 Xperia devices

Sony Ericsson is on a great path. They recently announced that their once flagship device the Xperia X10 will be upgraded to OS 2.3 Gingerbread and are also ready to release a stellar new lineup of devices. Today is a new day and with it comes good news, but with some conditions.

Sony Ericsson wrote on the company blog today that “It will be possible to unlock the boot loader for certain releases of our 2011 Xperia phones, such as Xperia arc, Xperia neo, Xperia pro and Xperia PLAY”. Certainly good news for developers who want full access to their device, but there are some restrictions too: your device has to be SIM unlocked, unlocking the boot loader is region specific and the only way to know is to connect your phone to the Fastboot tool in the Android SDK. Finally, Sony Ericsson states that once you unlock the boot loader you may void the warranty of the device and “you might damage your phone permanently. In worst case, it will cause physical injuries or material damage, for example, due to the phone overheating.”

Sony Ericsson suggests that only advanced user should attempt to unlock the boot loader and they “strongly recommend that standard users NOT unlock the boot loader”. This feature is expected to be enabled sometime in the Spring.
