We’ve seen over the past months several carriers increasing the text messaging rates – mainly for those who are not subscribed to a text plan. MTS is jumping on the bus and will increase text messaging charges on May 4th. They state that “In order to continue to expand our wireless coverage across Manitoba, there are increased equipment costs, maintenance costs, and network costs. Hence, this decision will help us to support our wireless business and to remain competitive in the wireless industry.”
According to their website text messaging will now be broken down into two categories: Canadian Text Messaging and Non-Canadian Text Messaging:
The changes are as follows:
– All text messages sent to a mobile device that has been activated with a non-Canadian carrier (e.g. Verizon, T-Mobile, Vodaphone) will be $0.25/msg.
– All text messages sent while travelling outside of Canada will be $0.35/msg.
The maximum charge for all non-Canadian text messages described above will be $35.00 per month.
