IT research firm Gartner has released a report today which states that worldwide mobile phone sales in the 3rd quarter reached 309 million units, in addition Smartphone sales went over the 41 million mark, a 12.8% increase.
Carolina Milanesi, research director at Gartner said “The third quarter of 2009 saw the announcement of many new mobile devices, including several Android smartphones ready for the holiday season in the fourth quarter, but hardware commoditisation and the growth in open platforms will make it harder for them to stand out.”
However, what’s even more exciting to some is the amount of market share that Apple has. In Q3, the Apple iPhone now accounts for a staggering 17.1% of global smartphone sales. This represents just over 7 million units shipped and puts Apple in the No. 3 spot, only behind first place Nokia and Canadian-based RIM.
