21% of Canadians use mobile internet

canadian_mobileA new study by Nielsen Online called “Q1 2009 Canadian Mobile Internet Report” shows that 21% of mobile consumers use their mobile phones to browse the Web and access their e-mail accounts (In Q4 2008 we were at 16%). With 3.9 million mobile internet users the reason for the sudden spike is due to more Canadians getting smartphones, unlimited data plans and people are more aware of what their mobile phone can actually do. The top device is the Apple iPhone 3G but what are the 21% doing online? Well the report showed the top categories include: Portals such as Windows Live, Yahoo!, Google, e-mail, weather, news, current events and search.

Eric Puterbaugh, director, client services, Nielsen Online said “The mobile market in Canada has grown rapidly since we first reported on the data in Q4 2008. Every country has unique needs for mobile audience measurement driven by carriers, handset availability and media brands focused on their market. While we see many global media properties on the list of sites, Canadian media brands are actively extending their reach into the mobile channel.”
