The Nexus 7 tablet, now offered in a Wi-Fi and HSPA+ version, has been a great success for Google. It could be that it runs the latest Android OS, the specs, design or even the cheap price point at $209 (CDN) for the 16GB version, or $309 for the 32GB HSPA+ version. However, a rumour has once again surfaced that might come true.
Before Google and Samsung launched the Nexus 10, Richard Shim, an analyst at NPD DisplaySearch, said both companies would form a partnership and release a 10-inch tablet. He was absolutely correct. In the same report, Shim “confirmed that Google will start production on a $99 tablet in December.” This is the latest rumour to flood the internet.
According to DigiTimes, Google and ASUS are going teaming up again and will release a new Nexus 7 tablet “as early as the first quarter of 2013.” The price will be chopped and come in between $99 – $149, mainly due to the inclusion of glass-film-film (GFF) technology (apparently this will also make it thinner). DigiTimes also notes that shipment estimates are expected to hit between 500,000-600,000 units, primarily targeted to emerging markets. No word on any other specs.
