Apple discounts a variety of Canadian-made apps and games ahead of Canada Day

iTunes App

With the nation’s birthday coming next Wednesday, Apple has discounted a variety of Canadian-made games and apps to celebrate Canada Day. A lot of what’s on offer here is compelling and it’s all discounted by about 50 per cent. Best of all, you’re helping support Canadian developers and game studios.

On the more useful side of the spectrum, there’s Wake Alarm Clock, a beautiful app designed by Toronto-based Tiny Hearts; Manual, a fantastic camera app that lets you control the aperture, ISO and shutter speed of your iPhone’s camera when you decide to take a snap; Minuum, an interesting take on the traditional QWERY keyboard by a startup that grew out of the University of Toronto; Capo Touch, an app that slows recorded music and helps with identifying guitar chords; and Checkmark 2, a very handsome looking reminder app.

However, if there’s one app I recommended getting, it’s 1Password. The password manager, developed by Toronto-based AgileBits, is free, but includes a set of pro features that can be unlocked with an in-app purchase. That in-app purchase is 50 per cent off during this sale. The pro features make an already useful app even better.

There are also a lot of compelling games on offer (fun Canadian tidbit: behind the United States and Japan, Canada has the largest game industry in the world). There’s Alto’s Adventure, an endless racer that exemplifies the best genre has to offer; Hitman GO, a fun, tactical take on the long-running Hitman franchise; and Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition, an updated release of the Bioware classic.

See all the apps and games that are available by navigating to the “Happy Canada Day!” page from either the iTunes desktop app or your mobile phone.

If you’re the owner of an Android or BlackBerry 10 device, and you’re feeling a bit left out, fret not; Amazon is giving away more than 20 paid apps and games through its own app marketplace. The selection is not as great, granted, but it’s very hard to argue against the prices.
