When Rogers launched their LTE in Ottawa they also came out with their data pricing – which immediately received some backlash. The prices were high and ranged from $45 for 1.5GB to $90 for 9GB, each additional GB after 9 was $10. Today, coming off the news of their LTE network being turned on in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, Rogers has come out with a very respectable promo offer. If you are interested in grabbing hold of the Sierra Wireless AirCard 313U or the upcoming HTC Jetstream tablet on a 3-year you can get an “introductory price” of $52.93 for 10 GB data. In addition, when the LTE Samsung Galaxy S II Rogers will extend the promo price and offer up a $50 plan for 10 GB. No word on when the promo ends.

This actually makes sense. You pay $30 for 6gb os data on 4G & 3G. You pay $50 for only 20 dollars more then the 4g one for 10gb of data on LTE. This does sound like a great deal. If the iPhone 5 looks the same as the older ones ill be getting the Samsung galaxy s2 lte & this data plan.

Honestly they should have just permanently kept $30 for 6gb even if it was a promo it would have encouraged people to go with lte. I don’t know how much it costs Rogers, I can only say this from my perspective but really could they lose by doing that? Obviously when I say $30 for 6gb I mean Lte not that the data actually differs. Btw just because you can download something quicker it doesn’t mean you’ll run up your data quicker. Doing what you did before Lte would use the exact same amount of data.

It WOULD be nice if I *actually* got the advertised speed on my HSPA and HSPA+ for the $30 I give over to Rogers every month – but as it happens, I only get about 10% of 21mbps almost all the time..which is a complete sham. On the rare occasion that I do spike over 2mbps, it’s some place where I rarely go, or will be again in some time, and then it’s still under 5mbps. What can I expect with LTE? From what I heard from my local Rogers Plus location is that people are STILL returning their LTE wireless modems because it’s slow.
Promo pricing or no promo pricing, get your s**t together Rogers and actually invest in making your current network better equipped to handle all the traffic you, or rather we, throw at it.

Wish the bucket was smaller but it being the same price per GB as the 6GB for $30 is a good start. I just can’t see myself using 10GB on a mobile phone just yet. The battery life on the phone wouldn’t let me

The newer technology is not to make it more affordable. It is just to suck more money out of the potential customers. And with that, they’ll be motivated to stop supporting the older tech. I wonder when they’ll drop plain old 2G (GSM)

I really don’t see what people would do with those LTE speeds to pay $45+ alone for it and its not even unlimited. HSPA+ is already fast enough to browse and what not on the go. Makes me wonder…

Some people don’t use a lot of bandwidth. You pay 30+ for home internet with a 25GB cap with Bell and Rogers.
A lot of my friends only use 5-6 gb and when at home use their device tethered for everything. So in essence it is one price for mobile and home browsing.
I can see the 50 10 gb plan doing well. Would I like it cheaper sure, that’s human nature to want it for less. But all in all not a bad deal for insane speeds.

We, as Canadians, are paying far too much for our wireless services. Even the current carrier promotions of 6GB for $30 is not that great, just less extravagant.

I agree it isn’t that great but it is the best available option. That being said, it isn’t available for a majority of the time. One would have to wait for the promo to be available. This is obviously disregarding wind and mobilicity which is horrible in my area.

I don’t think you read enough, 1-5¢ is for WIRED Internet, for Wireless Cellular Internet, with the cost of Node-B (Antennas) it cost about 1$ per GB (Yes we talk about HSPA+/LTE). It’s just the cost for the network, we don’t talk about administratives and (too much) marketing. But yes they still make money!

@Nelz: Yea I agree. Of course they make money off of it, it’s a business. If neither of the Big 3 were making any money off of it’s clients, they would not be able to invest into the technology that is available today. In other words, without profits, there would be no iPhone, Galaxy S2, Galaxy S2 X, BlackBerries….need I go on. If people don’t like what they pay for services in Canada, they aren’t obligated to pay for it.

Relatively speaking, that isn’t a bad deal coming from Rogers, question is… is that pricing on its own or is it in addition to a voice plan? I couldn’t find anything on that.
I’d pay $50/10GB for the data plan alone and do my voice calls with it on Skype/Fring/etc. no problem.

You are just one of the people that keep complaining. If you do not like it then move on & go to something else.
I do have the 30$ for 6gb & that is enough for me but this deal is better for people that use the data more. I use data like no tomorrow on my phone & i just go near 6gb ( i go around 5.5gb a month) If you have the money & willing to do this plan then go for it.

The whole “some people don’t use a lot of bandwidth” doesn’t work here, cause if those people use it for light surfing, you don’t need LTE in the first place.
LTE if for things that need faster Internet, like video, gaming, streaming of any kind, video chat.
All of which need a lot of data. More then 10gb a month would get you at a pathetic $50 a month.
You’re a light user, don’t get “4G” in the first place.
Not that it matters. You’ll have some people falling for this cause it’s new and shiny.

I would like LTE for the lower latency. 1GB for $10 would make a killer VoIP phone. HSPA is good, but not perfect for VoIP.
$45-50 is way too much for data only anyway, unless it includes enough data so that you can drop your home internet, which isn’t the case with only 10GB.

Hey, everyone here thinks the 6GB/$30 is pretty decent for a big 3. That’s $5/GB, this is also $5/GB. LTE is expensive. Remember the old prices for HSPA+ when it first came out? This is fair. Remember, nobody is forcing you to get LTE. For those already considering it, this isn’t bad.

Lemme guess, only valid with voice plan that costs at least $30? So $30 voice + $50 data = $80 + GRRF + 911 + tax???!!
$80+ for 3 years. That’s a lot.
Prepare for Rogers to come out with record breaking profits next quarter.

I’m just curious as to how many people here are actually requiring that much data. What are you using your phones for that require more than 10GB of data? I’ve been using my 6GB data plan ever since I got my Bold 8310 like 5 years ago and have never come even remotely close to 1GB. Yes, I understand that LTE brings “super fast speeds” which means you can stream movie, etc., but really? I’m not trying to stir up anyone. I’m just genuinely curious as to what you plan on doing with all that data that is causing such an uproar.

its something called Portable Hotspot. You use your data from your phone & connect it as a WiFi to your tablet or laptop where you are not able to get WiFi. That is one reason why people get that much data. The other reason could be that LTE has faster data times. So it can take up a lot of data.
Think about it.

I abuse the crap out of my current 2GB plan with Youtube streaming and listening to internet radio. I think I would have alot of fun with 10GB, and at $50/month, could drop my home phone with VoIP and pay around the same amount.

Anyways, looking forward to getting this SGSII with a 10GB bucket Fingers crossed for NFC and wireless connectivity to my TV! XD

This is getting close to the price point that I would consider switching my Wimax at home to LTE. I pay $45/mo for 1.5mbps (never hit that high), and no real cap (cause it’s so slow). The trick would be forcing my family to monitor usage so we don’t get overage fees. $50 for 30gb and I would switch instantly. Even better would be if the data plan could be shared between devices. Are you listening, Bell?

Not bad compared to early pricing but still $50/mth! $30 for 1/2 of the bucket (5GB) is going to be much more attractive.
Rogers knows majority of clients will hardly go over 2GB if not even 1GB and are cashing on this – that’s $20 over their current best data plan just to experience faster download speeds. So for everyone, including myself, who never gets even near the 6GB limit today, not to say 10GB, this is simply a $20 hike over what we currently pay.

They literally lit up this network in Toronto TODAY and people think they deserve it for prices cheaper than the current 3G rates? Get a f*cking grip! It’s so tiring to read some of this garbage people spew here. I’m all for cheaper prices but my god, some of you are so disconnected from the world of business that it’s not even funny. You guys realize that these things cost MONEY, right? How much do you think an LTE deployment costs? Premium services cost a lot of money. If you want to complain about pricing than go complain about how Apple price fixes their devices year-round, year after year. No? Too loyal?
If you can’t afford something like LTE which is the latest wireless technology to date, then move aside and let the people who can afford it use it. Do you expect wireless carriers to shout “HEY, WE JUST QUADRUPLED YOUR DATA SPEEDS AND CUT THE PRICE IN HALF”.
They provide technology for you to use which costs millions, they don’t want to be your bff.

They should have done $35/6GB to get the lift in ARPU that they need to satisfy their shareholders and simplify it for their customers. No doubt that they will do that eventually (e.g. 1 year out) and are just price skimming early adopters.

When I read the title, I thought to myself, there will be a bunch of whiners that would still complain about the price. Give them more data per month, still complain. Sure enough, almost 3 full pages of the usual rants that’s out of touch with the industry. Only a handful of commenters actually know what they are talking about. Why am I not surprised?
These types of comments would be akin to your boss saying you a worth only 1/4 your salary and should work twice as many hours, because that’s the going rate in third world countries.

Why arent companies looking into the WiMax spectrum, its been out forever and its 4G.

Is this $50 dollar price including talk/text etc? or is it JUST for the data?
If its just for the data its still a freaking rip off. Considering that you will never get close to the 100 mbps download speeds, and tack on the cost for talk/text/voicemail etc…
You will be paying ~80 bucks a month for a smart phone plan… not exactly a good deal.
