Google reportedly working on standalone eye-tracking mixed reality headset

It seems Daydream View doesn’t encompass Google’s entire plan for virtual reality.

According to a report stemming form Engadget, Google is working on a new headset that functions significantly differently from Daydream. This headset is designed to operate as a standalone device and won’t rely on the power of a smartphone, according to the rumours.

The project also reportedly integrates eye-tracking technology with an algorithm that maps the real-world space in front of the user, similar to Microsoft’s HoloLens or the Sulon Q. The idea behind the device is to create a mixed-reality experience that combines virtual reality with augmented reality.

The internal components for the headset are reportedly being provided by Movidius, a computer vision company that Intel recently acquired for an undisclosed sum of money.

On the other side of the Google VR spectrum, Daydream is powered by certified Android 7.0 Nougat devices and is priced at $99.
