Facebook updates Trending topics experience on mobile

For the last couple of years, Facebook has been focused on a ‘mobile first’ strategy. The company has invested a lot of time and money in creating a great mobile experience because it believes mobile is the most important platform. This has included regular updates to its principal smartphone applications as well as dedicated apps for major features like messaging and groups.

Earlier this week, Facebook announced plans to roll out its Graph Search functionality (now known as simply ‘Facebook Search’) on mobile, and on Wednesday the social network announced updates to Trending, the product that dishes up relevant news topics based on what your network is talking about and sharing.

This latest update doesn’t have any impact on how Facebook determines which topics are Trending. Facebook will still identify Trending stories in the same way, but the way this information is presented to users on mobile will be very different.

Topics in trending are now organized into five sections. Tap on a topic and it will expand to show dedicated sections for ‘Articles,’ ‘In the Story,’ ‘Friends and Groups,’ ‘Near the Scene,’ and ‘Live Feed.’ Together these offer a cross section of a specific topic or event and its presence in your network. ‘Articles’ shows you coverage from new organizations, ‘In the Story’ is posts from people that are a part of the story, ‘Friends and Groups’ shows you what your contacts are saying, and so on.

Facebook says the new Trending experience is rolling out to Android users in the United State starting today. Support for international users and those on iOS devices is coming soon.
