Freedom Mobile upgrades its 5G network in Ontario, Alberta and B.C.

Freedom and Quebecor are working to break into the Big Three

Freedom Mobile is upgrading its networks in Ontario, Alberta and B.C. by turning on 180 new 5G sites in those provinces.

Notably, the Greater Toronto Area will have more extensive 5G/5G+ coverage with over 100 new sites in the area, notably expanding to Bradford West Gwillimbury, Newmarket and Stouffville. Freedom’s press release also mentions new sites going up in Barrie, Brantford, Cambridge, Guelph, Hamilton, Kitchener, London, Nigra Falls, St. Catharines, Waterloo and Windsor.

In Alberta and B.C., Freedom has built roughly 40 new 5G sites in the Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver and Victoria areas.

The press release also mentions that Freedom and its owner, Quebecor, are leveraging the recently acquired 3500 and 3800 MHz spectrum to push out ideally 700Mbps. That said, most people will be unable to hit that; on average, iPhones pull down somewhere between 100-180Mbps.

Quebecor bought a large chunk of 3500 MHz spectrum in 2021 when it was eyeing a larger expansion. Then, at the end of November 2024, the telecom bought its chunk of 3800 MHz for $299 million.
