Apple unveiled new iPhone 16 and 16 Pro models yesterday, but amid all the flash and hype of the keynote, Apple left out some details. Once again, the U.S. iPhone models will be a little different from the ones available in Canada.
Per MacRumors, the new iPhone 16 models will support mmWave 5G tech in the U.S., but models in other regions like Canada will be limited to sub-6GHz 5G.
As a quick refresher, 5G comes in two main flavours: Sub-6 and mmWave. The latter offers faster speeds but has less range and doesn’t penetrate obstacles. As such, it’s mainly used in urban areas, while Sub-6 is more widely used in rural and suburban areas where increased range is more important.
While some might find the lack of mmWave support frustrating, it won’t mean much in Canada, where almost all available 5G networks utilize Sub-6.
Aside from mmWave support, there’s another key difference between U.S. iPhone 16 models and the phones that will be available in Canada: SIM card slots. Outside the U.S., the iPhone 16 series still have physical SIM slots. You can learn more about that here.
