Apple announces iPhone 16 Pro series with new colour and A18 Pro

Once again, Apple Intelligence was a major talking point

Apple unveiled the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, boasting larger displays and more.

The phones sport 6.3- and 6.9-inch displays, the biggest and best yet in the company’s top-line iPhone models. The increased display size comes thanks to thinner bezels around the display.

The Pro line comes in four titanium finishes, including the new ‘desert’ shade. Apple highlighted improvements and thermals upgrades in the 16 Pro that enable 20 percent improved sustained performance.

Apple says the 16 Pro Max sports the best battery life in an iPhone ever.

Once again, Apple dedicated time to highlighting the capabilities of Apple Intelligence, which will arrive in a free software update starting next month in U.S. English for “most regions.” Much of what Apple said about Apple Intelligence was previously revealed at WWDC 2024. You can read more about it here.

New pro chip

Powering the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max is a new A18 Pro chip with a faster GPU, improved neural engine and more.

The A18 Pro sports a new six-core CPU and a six-core GPU. The CPU sports two performance cores and four efficiency cores and can run the same workload as the A17 Pro 15 percent faster while using 20 percent less power. The GPU is up to 20 percent faster.

Further, the A18 Pro also sports a new image signal processor (ISP), which enables some of the new camera features Apple highlighted during the event.

Apple also touted the A18 Pro chip as offering faster USB 3 speeds.

Improved camera

The iPhone 16 Pro series includes camera improvements, including a new 48-megapixel ‘fusion’ main camera and a 48-megapixel ultrawide camera. Apple says the new fusion camera boasts a faster sesnor, enabling higher frames per second (fps) video recording. It also enables faster data reading, enabling zero shutter lag for 48-megapixel ProRAW or HEIF photos.

However, the company’s 5x telephoto camera is still only 12-megapixel, though the company’s tetraprism design is now available on the 16 Pro as well as the Max.

The 16 Pro will also get Apple’s new camera control button, including an update enabling the ability to lock focus coming later. Camera control will now let users scroll through styles that can be applied to images captured on 16 Pro.

On the video side, Apple touted 4K 120fps recording, enabling cinematic slow-mo shots. Plus, Apple’s new ISP enables frame-by-frame colour grading.

Recordings will sound better on the iPhone 16 Pro thanks to updated studio-quality microphones. Apple announced a new Audio Mix feature that uses machine learning to isolate audio and adjust vocals in a shot.

Apple’s voice memos also let users record multiple layers.

All the new iPhone 16 models will be available for pre-order starting Friday and will be in stores starting September 20th.

The iPhone 16 Pro starts at $1,449 in Canada, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max starts at $1,749.
