Google launches AI-powered Photos search in limited U.S. test

Google says it wants to get the feature right before broadly deploying it

Back at Google I/O 2024, the search giant teased a new feature coming to its Photos app called ‘Ask Photos.’ The pitch at I/O was that Ask Photos would leverage Google’s Gemini AI to supercharge the app’s search functionality. Now Ask Photos is rolling out in early access, but only in the U.S.

Ask Photos brings support for natural language queries and allows the app to search content within photos. One example Google shared at I/O was asking, “What is my license plate?” and the Photos app would be able to tell which cars appear most often in your photos and pull the plate number for you.

Now, Google is rolling out Ask Photos in early access to select users in the U.S. who sign up on the waitlist. In a blog post, the company said it’s “making sure we get this experience right before rolling it out broadly.”

Google also notes in the blog post that data from Google Photos “is never used for ads,” and it protects the data with “industry-leading security measures.”
