Virgin Plus joins Koodo in offering a $25 talk and text plan

The plan is only available for new customers

Bell-owned Virgin Plus has followed Telus-owned Koodo in dropping the cost of its talk and text plan to $25/mo.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a plan change without some sort of catch. In this case, the catch is that the plan still costs $30/mo, it’s just $25/mo for new activations. Frustratingly, Virgin doesn’t list any sort of end date for the promotion, so it’s not clear if the price will go up after a set period of time. That said, price hikes from carriers are basically inevitable at this point.

Another key difference between the plans is that Koodo’s is predicated on signing up for autopay to get the $25/mo price, whereas Virgin doesn’t require signing up for autopay to get a discount.

The talk and text plan includes unlimited Canada-wide calling and texting and pay-per-use 4G data at speeds of up to 150Mbps. However, I would strongly advise against using data with this plan since Virgin charges an absurd $20 per gigabyte, rounded up to the nearest gigabyte. That means using 1.01GB of data would result in a $40 charge, since it’d count as 2GB. Yikes.

With that in mind, if you think you’ll use even 1GB of data per month, it’d be better to get Virgin’s $39/50GB 4G plan because it’d be cheaper than the talk-and-text plan.

Anyway, as crazy expensive as the data is, it’s great to see prices come down on providers’ basic talk-and-text plan. The price of this plan has been all over the place in recent months. Back in April 2024, Virgin raised the talk and text plan to $30 after it was briefly at $25. But back in 2023, talk and text plan prices climbed as high as $35 for a period.
