Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is currently on a tour meeting with U.S. innovation leaders.

In between meeting delivering this year’s New York University commencement address, meeting with the leaders of companies like Honeywell and Pepsi, and participating in armchair discussions and roundtables, Trudeau took time to pen an op-ed for the Boston Globe.

Trudeau’s letter touches on investments made by the federal government towards ensuring Canada’s tech and innovation future, while highlighting progress made during Trudeau’s tenure as prime minister.

“Canadians have created more than a half-million jobs over the last two years,” wrote Trudeau. “The unemployment rate is near 40-year lows, and wages are growing at their fastest rate in six years.”

“We are home to a highly skilled workforce and some of the world’s top researchers. Our prospects for the future — in the innovation economy — are bright.”

The letter also addresses Canada’s role as a leader in artificial intelligence (AI) research and development, including the fact that the country has established a Pan-Canadian AI Strategy to “secure Canada’s foothold in AI research and training.”

It’s difficult to read Trudeau’s letter outside the lens of the current political climate in the U.S.

Trudeau hasn’t necessarily positioned himself as counter to U.S. President Donald Trump, but the fact that Trudeau’s letter mentions topics like the “climate change, inequality, and the gender opportunity gap,” shows the manner in which Trudeau is attempting to U.S. liberal values.

The letter even touched on open data initiatives undertaken by the Canadian government, in order to increase access for developers.

“Here’s the bottom line: Canada is an amazing place to live, work, and invest,” concluded Trudeau. “We’re open for business, and creating more opportunity all the time. Come on up. There’s never been a better time to do so.”
