Apple facing camera patent lawsuit over iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X

iPhone X

Israeli startup Corephotonics has filed a patent infringement claim against Apple in regards to the cameras found in the iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X.

According to Corephotonics, it met with Apple to discuss its technology, and while Apple refused to enter into an agreement to license the company’s technology, the tech giant subsequently used technology that was described during the meeting. The company further alleges that Apple’s negotiator even boasted the company could infringe on any patent with impunity.

Corephotonics previously sued Apple in November 2017 over camera technology used in the iPhone 7 Plus.

As Patently Apple notes, however, the new claim centres on a patent granted only in January this year. Therefore, there is question as to how Apple could have infringed on a patent that was granted after the phones containing this technology have been on the market since the end of 2017.

Patently Apple also mentions that the new patent is “basically a redo of their first patent infringement lawsuit filed in November with the addition of one new patent that wasn’t available at the time of the original lawsuit.”
