Pokémon Ultra Sun and Moon is set to be the last core Pokémon role-playing game (RPG) for the 3DS, with the series moving on to the Nintendo Switch.

According to IGN, Game Freak director Shigeru Ohmori says that the Pokémon series has seen the full extent of what can be done on Nintendo’s handheld console.

“When we were making Pokémon X and Y, we really were trying to push the 3DS system to its absolute limits — which is what we thought we’d done. But when Sun and Moon came around, we completely redesigned the system, and actually ended up pushing the 3DS even further to what we thought was the most we could draw out of it,” said Ohmori to IGN.

Ohmori explains that his team is treating Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon as the culmination its work on the 3DS handheld, as Game Freak has “really, really pushed the system to its absolute limits.”

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon is launching on November 17th. This time around the game feature additional Ultra Beasts, new Z-Moves, and an alternate reality accessed through a wormhole.

Earlier this year at E3, the Pokémon Company revealed that a core Pokémon game is currently in development for the Switch. At this time we know very little about the Switch’s Pokémon title, however we can expect better visuals and hopefully more Eevees.
